- Pro Tip: Clear trees and weeds to increase spawn chances!
Every spring, as the snow melts and green returns to Pelican Town, farmers leaving their own plot of land might spot something special poking through the soil: Wild Horseradish.
This humble root vegetable is more than just another forageable. Humble as it may be, it can help you in your early-game progress and friendship with the valley's villagers.
What is Wild Horseradish in Stardew Valley π±
In Stardew Valley, Wild Horseradish is one of the first forageable items you'll encounter when starting your farming journey. This edible item is found only in Spring and represented by a green-topped root bulb.
It can be spotted sprouting from the ground across various locations in the valley. While it doesn't offer as much energy as a Leek when eaten, this easy to find root can play a role in your early-game success.
Horseradish in the real world
While Stardew Valley's version is a simple forageable, real-world horseradish has quite the kick.
This root vegetable (latin name: Armoracia rusticana) has been cultivated for over thousands of years. The ingredient has a pungent, spicy flavor which is the basis for Horseradish sauce. The spicy kick actually comes from enzymes that are activated when the root is damaged, whether by grating, cutting, or chewing. This is its natural defense mechanism!
Unlike the game version, cultivated horseradish rarely grows wild these days. Instead, it's carefully grown in gardens and farms. This particularly happens in regions with cold winters, as the plant requires a period of dormancy to thrive.
It can become invasive through underground shoots though, so mind those if you're thinking of planting them on your real world farm or vegetable garden!
Where to find Wild Horseradish πΊοΈ
The best part about Wild Horseradish? It's surprisingly common! There are 3 prime hunting grounds to find it.
Cindersap Forest is your best bet, particularly in the southern area near Marnie's Ranch. All forageable item spawn points have a 50% chance of spawning Wild Horseradish in Spring. The other 50% are Dandelion.
The second area you should go to is the Backwoods (exit your farm to the north). Wild Horseradish have a 42% to spawn here on any available forageable spawn location. With 58%, Leek is the contender in this area.
You can also check the Mountain area north of town (the part of the map where Robin is located). There are fewer forageable item spawn spots than in Cindersap Forest and the Backwoods. With a spawn chance of 42%, the chance is identical to the Backwoods.
Pro tip: Check all of these areas daily during spring. Forageable items respawn regularly, and you don't want to miss out on these valuable finds! Also be sure to clear any of these areas of excess trees and weeds. It increases the chance of wild items to spawn.
Uses and Benefits β¨
Once you have a decent supply of Wild Horseradish in your inventory, what can you do with it?
Gifting π
Want to make friends in the valley? Wild Horseradish can help!
Krobus (found in the sewers once you obtain the Rusty Key) particularly loves receiving this item as a gift. Caroline, Harvey, Leah and Linus like receiving it.
However, be careful who you give it to – Haley hates it. But then again, she's not much of a gift receiver anyway. So do Jas and Vincent.
Do you have a Super Cucumber fish pond? In their 3rd quest to increase the pond capacity, they can ask for Pickles as gift. Any type of Pickles will do, even the ones you make from Wild Horseradish! More on that in the Crafting section.
Community Center π
Working on completing your Community Center bundles?
Wild Horseradish is one of the required items for the Spring Foraging Bundle. Collecting one early in the season will help you progress toward those sweet bundle rewards.
Completing the Spring Foraging Bundle by adding Daffodil, Leek and Dandelion, will get you 30 Spring Seeds as a reward.
Once all of the foraging bundles have been completed, the Bridge east of the mine entrance will be repaired. This grants you access to the Quarry, which offers lots of mineable resources.
Crafting π¨
Though Wild Horseradish isn't used in many recipes, it can be turned into 10 Spring Seeds when combined with Daffodil, Leek and Dandelion. This is perfect for sustainable foraging operations, as planted seeds will spawn any of the ingredients at random after 7 days of watering them.
Wild Horseradish can be placed in a Keg to get Brown juice. When placed in a Preserves Jar, Wild Horseradish will become Brown Pickles.
Using a piece of Cloth together with a Wild Horseradish in the Sewing Machine, you will be able to create a Good Grief Shirt.
You can also craft Spring Seeds from Wild Horseradish by putting it into a Seed Maker.
Cooking π΄
Wild Horseradish can also be used in the Shrimp Cocktail recipe. Together with Shrimp and Tomato, this lovely dish will increase your Fishing and Luck levels by 1 when eaten. It will also restore 225 energy and 101 health. The recipe for Shrimp Cocktail can be received by watching television on Day 28 of Winter (Year 2).
π‘ Fun fact: while Krobus loves being gifted Wild Horseradish, he dislikes receiving Shrimp Cocktail. This is due to one of the ingredients being Shrimp, which he dislikes.
π‘ Even funnier fact: Haley hates Shrimps and Wild Horseradish. She dislikes Tomato. Yet, she likes Shrimp Cocktail... This girl is nuts.
Feeling lucky? Putting a jar of Brown Pickles in the Luau Pot Luck will give you a Good response. It earns you 60 friendship points with all of the villagers!
Selling π°
While not the most valuable item, Wild Horseradish can fetch a decent price when shipped through your shipping bin.
Base selling price is 50g, which isn't bad for something you found growing wild! It goes up as high as 100g for Iridium (purple) quality.
Pickled Wild Horseradish (Brown Pickles) will sell for 150g, while juiced Wild Horseradish (Brown Juice) will sell for 112g. Not bad for a free forageable, right?
Final Thoughts π
Whether you're a new farmer just starting in Stardew Valley or a seasoned player looking to optimize your spring foraging route, Wild Horseradish can be a valuable find.
Its versatility in gifting, bundle completion, crafting and selling makes it worth keeping an eye out for those distinctive brown bulbs with green tops poking through the soil.
Just remember – unlike its real-world counterpart, Stardew's version won't bring tears to your eyes when you harvest it! Happy foraging, farmers!
