Last week, a great combination of Daily Quests popped up in Tower Defense Simulator over on Roblox.
"Deal 36.000 damage with Sniper", combined with "Triumph in easy difficulty 2 times".
Wanting to grab this practically free XP quickly, I started these two quests both at the same time. It got me thinking though: can you solo a game of TDS with just Snipers?
Sniper stats
Before we dig deeper into this answer, let's look at the Sniper statistics in the Tower Defense Simulator game on Roblox.
Level | Price | Damage | Firerate | DPS | Range | Extra |
0 | 300 | 4 | 4 | 1 | 27.5 | |
1 | 150 | 6 | 3.5 | 1.71 |
27.5 |
|
2 | 500 | 12 | 3.5 | 3.43 | 32.5 |
Hidden detection |
3 | 1500 | 30 | 3.5 | 8.57 | 35 | Lead detection |
4 | 4000 | 40 | 2 | 20 | 45 |
One of the key advantages about snipers, is that snipers in TDS do not have a placing limit. Meaning you can use all of your available tower slots (40 in solo) placing Sniper towers.
8 Snipers in TDS (Roblox) making quick work of the Grave Digger.
Obviously its range is also a key point, but the DPS is not. With just a DPS of 20 at maximum level, it's really not that great compared to other towers.
Role of the Sniper
In any kind of game which has snipers, or in a real life army for that matter, snipers play a supporting role. They are long range powerhouses, but will never be seen at the forefront of a battle.
It doesn't matter that the sniper does 40 damage per shot and can shoot an acorn from a tree across the map.
In Tower Defense Simulator on Roblox, Snipers are especially effective against single, high-health targets, like bosses. Especially once they reach level 4, their high damage shots ranging almost across the map can grant you a victory.
Challenges of the Sniper
In Tower Defense Simulator, snipers are not a sure way to win a level. In some situations, they just aren't good enough.
Lack of space
Snipers need to be placed on the high ground. That means that in not every level, there is enough space to place enough sniper towers.
In levels with enough high ground, you can place up to 40 sniper towers (solo), which means a lot of damages across a lot of range. But in other levels, there just isn't enough high ground to place the amount of snipers you need for a victory.
Lack of fire rate
It doesn't matter that the sniper does 40 damage per shot and can shoot an acorn from a tree across the map. If it only shoots once every 2 seconds, rounds with a lot of smaller health units are going to be a challenge.
Especially Breakers are difficult. Sure, they're 1-shot-kills a lot of the times, but if that 1 shot spawns 2 new enemies right towers the end of the path, you're still screwed.
Just snipers, a good idea?
With all of the above, let's go back to the original question: "can you solo a game of TDS with just Snipers?"
The answer is: yes, but...
Yes,
Sure you can!
Just play a map, any map, on easy. You can solo it using just snipers and you'll be fine.
You don't even need to use farms, there will be plenty of income to get 8 to 10 snipers to level 4. Which is all you need to defeat the final Easy boss, the Grave Digger.
But...
... don't get you're hopes up.
Defeating the grave digger does not mean you can also defeat the Molten boss. His health (70.000 HP) is so large, it takes 1750 shots to kill this dude. 20 Snipers will have to each fire about 90 shots at him in the time it takes for him to cross the path. Which, with a fire rate of 2 seconds, will have to take almost 3 minutes.
If he were to walk alone, that wouldn't even be an issue. Most maps will take about 3 minutes, bar the difficult maps with shorter paths.
Using enough snipers, even the Molten Boss is no match for your towers in TDS (Roblox).
The problem is that the Molten boss doesn't walk alone. As there are other enemies in his wave as well him spawning minions, snipers' attention is drawn away from the Molten boss. Because of that, it is virtually impossible to finish him of with low amounts of snipers.
Of course, if you are lucky enough to play a map in which you can place 20+ snipers, you're golden. With more than 20 snipers at level 4, you will be able to defeat the Molten Boss any day of the week in Tower Defense Simulator.
Focus your sniper fire
A final tip for using snipers in general, but especially when just using snipers: use the target option.
Enemies who can spawn new enemies, like the necromancer, often walk last in the line. Because they leave the gate last, or because they're just so incredibly slow.
To make sure these units to not get a chance to spawn too many enemies, use the targeting option on some of your snipers. Select about 3 - 5 of your snipers and click the target option once to the left. This will set it to "last enemy" instead of "first enemy".
This way, a few snipers will always target the last enemy. Which, in rounds with spawners, will often be the necromancer-type of enemies.
