Short and sweet:

  • Players may face new environmental and strategic challenges.
  • The release is expected as soon as February 2025.

The world of Citadelum is about to expand!

Developer Abylight has officially announced The Lost Eagles of Germania, an upcoming free DLC that promises to introduce fresh challenges, new enemies, and an entirely new biome.

What We Know So Far

Though Abylight has yet to reveal extensive details about the DLC, here’s what has been confirmed:

  • A Brand-New Biome: Players will be able to explore an uncharted environment, distinct from anything seen in Citadelum so far. Speculation suggests it could be a dense, rugged terrain inspired by Germania’s historical landscapes.
  • New Enemies: The DLC will introduce new adversaries, forcing players to adapt their strategies and defenses. Could these be fierce local warriors or dangerous wildlife?
  • New Missions: Fresh objectives and scenarios will add to the strategic depth of the game, offering players new challenges to conquer.

What This Could Mean for Gameplay

With the introduction of a new biome, players may need to rethink how to approach city building, resource management, and combat. The new environmental conditions might even impact building efficiency, although that would be considered a new game mechanic.

Resource scarcity or unique biome-based advantages could also shift the way players manage supplies and trade routes.

Germania was known for its fertile soil, so it's not strange to expect agricultural challenges, like more shipments of grain to be sent off map.

At the same time, the Roman Empire never completely gained control over the Germanic area. A lot of soldiers were stationed at the border along the Rhine after their defeat in the famous Battle of the Teutoburg Forest

Likewise, the arrival of 'new enemies' means players might need to prepare for evolving threats. The addition of tough and exciting missions hints at an expanded narrative, possibly exploring historical conflicts or legendary battles in the region, like the Teutoburg Forest.

It is likely that new enemies will include Germanic tribes. Their warfare tactics were mostly ambush style, so maybe we'll finally get some more control over the battles?

Developer Insights & Community Reactions

Abylight has yet to share any kind of developer insights about The Lost Eagles of Germania.

I am really hoping for new mechanics tied to the new biome. The maps so far have been easy enough to navigate, only having to make sure you use the fertile soil in an optimum way. The snowy biome in the Britannia campaign visually looked impressive and new, but didn't add anything in the way of mechanics.

As with the previous campaign, I'd be very happy to see a new kind of objective added to the gameplay: timed deliveries. With Germania being so fertile and having dense forests, food and wood would have been a great source of income from the area. They must have been exporting all over the empire from the Germanic province.

And of course, the battle system could still use an upgrade. Yes, I know Citadelum is considered a city builder. But battles need to be more interesting rather than the chore they are now.

Release Information & What to Expect Next

At the time of the announcement, Abylight has not provided a release date for The Lost Eagles of Germania.

However, considering the last DLC, The Last Conqueror of Britannia, was announced in late November and released just two weeks later, we could expect the release of The Lost Eagles of Germania as early as February 2025!

However, developers and publishers can always delay or change media tactics. Interested players can of course expect more information in the coming weeks as the developer unveils additional details. Join the official Discord server or keep an eye on the Citadelum Steam page if you're interested!
