This is not going to be a guide on how to get rich fast, how to get the best start possible, or how to play Stardew Valley in general. If you have set yourself a goal to rush the Community Center, you likely know the basic game mechanics full well.
In this guide, we are going to walk through your first Spring in Pelican Town with one definitive goal: having the Community Center fully restored before Winter 28th. Even if that sounds daunting for a single year, it is entirely achievable with careful planning. Grab your controller and play along!
Note: when you are creating the game and setting up your character, you can enter settings and tick the box for “Community Center year 1 guaranteed”. This will guarantee that you can buy Red Cabbage seeds at some point during Spring from the Travelling Cart. You don't have to tick it, but the Red Cabbage is the only thing that you can miss if you are relying on luck alone.
TL;DR - Spring Priorities
- Daily TV Check: Check the TV every morning for luck to avoid mining and fishing on bad luck days. Also check Queen of Sauce recipes.
- Crops: Plant basic Spring crops for the bundle, keep 1 extra Cauliflower for Jodi, and fertilize a large Parsnip patch to secure your 5 gold-star harvests early. Plant Kale for easy Farming XP.
- The 25,000g Sprint: Sell fish and crops fast to hit 25k total earnings. Pick Fruit Bats when Demetrius arrives to passively secure Artisan bundle fruits.
- Traveling Cart Ritual: Visit the cart every Friday and Sunday (6:00 AM - 8:00 PM) in Cindersap Forest for Red Cabbage seeds and exotic bundle items.
- Fish, fish, fish: Get Fiberglass Rod with bait, stick to the Mountain Lake on sunny days (Carp, Largemouth Bass) and the town river on rainy days (Shad, Bream) to maximize income and chest loot.
1. Three golden rules
I promised no guide on how to get the best start possible. However, our goal needs a good start. So let's just cover three basics that you NEED to know.
Rule 1: Respect the Spirits (and Watch TV)
Check your TV every single morning. It has some vital information on how to spend your days.
- Spirit Luck: Don't go mining or fishing on bad luck days. The fishing minigame is tricky enough with the basic Bamboo Pole; bad fortune only adds unnecessary frustration. If the spirits are annoyed, stay on or around the farm to forage, clear trees, break rocks, and talk to villagers. Once you get Fiberglass Rod and use bait, it's not too bad if the spirits are somewhat annoyed.
- Queen of Sauce: Always watch the cooking channel on Sundays and Wednesdays to learn recipes early. You will need recipes like Maki Roll and Fried Egg for the Chef's bundle later on!
Rule 2: Shopping & The Traveling Cart
During your gameplay, several shops are available to you to buy supplies.
- Pierre's Schedule: Pierre's shop is closed on Wednesdays. If you sell a batch of fish on Tuesday night, plan your seed purchases accordingly!
- JojaMart: While JojaMart is open longer and on more days, their seed prices are significantly higher. You can buy there without compromising your Community Center, just make sure not to get the membership!
- The Traveling Cart Ritual: On Fridays and Sundays (6:00 AM to 8:00 PM), a merchant appears in Cindersap Forest, just west of Marnie's ranch. You must visit her every single time she appears.
- The Red Cabbage Priority: Obtaining Red Cabbage (or Red Cabbage Seeds) is the ultimate bottleneck for Year 1 Community Center runs. The Traveling Cart is your primary source to get it before Year 2.
- Random stock: While all bundle items can technically spawn here, the merchant only appears 32 times across the four seasons with random stock. Pick up hard-to-craft or exotic items if you have spare cash, but don't count on her for items you can easily source yourself.
- Robin, Clint & Willy: Festivals happen on Spring 13 and 24. Shops are closed, which means you can't retrieve your tools from Clint if you've brought them for upgrades. Don't bring tools you need on Spring 12 or 23. Robin won't build, new buildings can't be ordered either. Don't count on Willy being there to sell fish for a beach fishing day.
Rule 3: Forage & Save Resources
Forage Cindersap Forest, the Beach, and Pelican Town every day in the first week or so.
- What to eat vs. sell: Eat low-value forage (like Spring Onions) to keep your stamina bar full. Sell the rest in the shipping bin at night for early working capital.
- Don't sell Wood, Stone, Sap or Fiber:
- Wood (300): Needed immediately to repair the Beach bridge for extra tide pool foraging. You also need hundreds of wood for Robin's farm building upgrades.
- Stone: Required for building upgrades and crafting essential gear like Furnace.
- Sap: Vital for crafting Basic Fertilizer. Have at least 100 in stock (makes 50 fertilizer), sell the rest.
- Fiber: Keep 40 for a couple of Scarecrows.
2. Key Event Triggers Checklist
Several mechanics in Stardew Valley only progress after you trigger specific cutscenes or conditions. Some events need to be triggered by you. Others happen automatically, based on either a time, date or something you did.
In Spring, make sure you do these things to trigger the necessary event to progress in your journey:
- Enter Pelican Town on or after Spring 5th: To open the Community Center, enter Pelican Town from the Bus Stop on a day when it is not raining, on or after Spring 5th, between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm. It will trigger a cutscene in which Major Lewis will unlock the Community Center.
- Interact with the Golden Scroll: After the cutscene, enter the Community Center, head left to the Crafts Room and interact with the golden tile. It will trigger the Wizard to send you a letter the next day.
- Visit the Wizard in his tower: Head to the far southwest of Cindersap Forest and enter the Wizard's Tower. Drinking his potion unlocks Forest Magic, allowing you to translate the Junimo scrolls and officially begin depositing bundle items.
- Earn 25.000g: Sell enough fish, forage, and crops to make 25,000g in cumulative earnings. Once your total lifetime earnings reach 25,000g, Demetrius will visit you and ask you to use the cave on your farm for some research. Choose Fruit bats. Buying fruit trees in Year 1 drains thousands of gold needed for the Vault. Fruit Bats drop random tree fruits (Apples, Pomegranates, Peaches, etc.) passively throughout the year, effortlessly filling your Artisan Bundle slots.
- Find copper ore. Clint will visit you the next morning and offer you blueprints for the Furnace (25 stone, 20 copper ore). This will allow you to smelt ore into bars, which will open up a lot of crafting recipes. Note: it only needs to be copper ore, the source is irrelevant. You can mine it, dig it up or even find it in a treasure chest while fishing.
3. Farming & Foraging
Especially on grumpy spirit days, you should forage Horseradish, Leek, Daffodil and Dandelion in your travels around the map. Once you reach day 5 and get some Parsnip income, you do not have to rely on selling forageables. Still, they make for cheap gifts or energy restorers.
If you cut down weeds with your Scythe, you might get mixed seeds too. Plant them on your farm for some extra income.
Spring Crops Bundle Requirements
Plant at least these crops as early as possible in your run (so you don't forget):
- Parsnip: 1 + 5 (gold quality) required (4 days to grow).
- Green Bean: 1 required (12 days to grow, regrows every 3 days - plant early!).
- Potato: 1 required (6 days to grow).
- Cauliflower: 2 required (13 days to grow). You only need 1 for the Spring Crops bundle, but Jodi will send a request for 1 Cauliflower on Spring 19th. Helping your neighbors pays off!
Even though you only need 6 Parnips, in your first week you should plant about 30. It will give you the farming XP to increase your farming level, unlocking essential craftable items like the Scarecrow. Then once you learn to craft Fertilizer, plant even more parsnips for the money - and the quality bundle!
Once you have the Parsnips covered, switch to Kale. The seeds are a little more expensive, but so is the sell price of Kale itself. And as an extra bonus, harvesting Kale gives you way more Farming XP. Farming XP leads to a higher Farming skill level, which leads to Quality Sprinklers crafting at level 6. It would be great if you could achieve that before Summer 1!
Mastering Fertilizer for Quality Crops
Craft Basic Fertilizer (unlocked at Farming Level 1, costs 2 Sap per tile) and tile a patch of 15-20 Parsnips. Because Parsnips are cheap and mature in 4 days, running fertilized batches guarantees your 5 gold-star Parsnips early, removing massive pressure from your Summer and Fall crop planning.
The Quality Crops bundle requires 5 gold-star items from 3 out of 4 crop types. You can choose from Parsnip in Spring, Melon and Corn in Summer or Pumpkin (and Corn) in Fall. Parsnips are the easiest and cheapest to get, followed by Corn. Then you can choose between Melon or Pumpkin. I prefer Melon, so you can finish that bundle by Summer and don't have to worry about it in Fall.
Note on Crop Quality: Normal crops cannot be used for the Quality Crops bundle, but higher-tier crops (Silver or Gold) can be used to satisfy standard single-crop bundle slots like the Spring Crops bundle. Feel free to plant everything on fertilized soil. The extra money or energy restored is worth it!
Tree Tapping
Once you have cleared a decent sized field on your farm, plant tree seeds (Maple, Oak, Pine) in vertical lines. They will grow into neat rows of trees, which will provide you with necessary tree products.
Craft Tappers (Foraging Level 3: 40 Wood, 2 Copper Bars) and attach them to trees as early as possible to start generating passive resin:
- Maple Tree -> Maple Syrup: Required for the Chef Bundle and Exotic Foraging Bundle. Also used in Bee House and makes for a great gift!
- Oak Tree -> Oak Resin: Required for the Enchanter Bundle and ingredient for Keg production.
- Pine Tree -> Pine Tar: Required for the Exotic Foraging Bundle.
Regarding gifting: Everybody likes Maple Syrup, apart from Maru. Then again, Maru is the only one who likes Oak Resin and Pine Tar, everybody else dislikes it.
4. Fishing & Profit Strategy
Fishing is your primary wealth engine during the first two weeks of Stardew Valley. It funds your seed purchases, tool upgrades, and Vault savings.
Even on a day with ‘mildly perturbed’ spirits, it’s possible to get over 2500g from fish and other items. Just make sure you are using a Fiberglass Rod.
Fiberglass Rod
A Fiberglass Rod allows you to attach bait! This is where fishing get interesting. Even the simple, default bait that you find in treasure chests and can craft with bug meat, has these effects:
- Reduce delay before nibble by 50%, essentially making fish bite twice as fast
- Lowers the chance of getting trash items
Use the Bait as an ingredient to craft Deluxe Bait and you will get these effects:
- Reduce delay before nibble by 67%, essentially making fish bite three times as fast
- Increase the fishing bar size by 12 pixels
Using bait will immensely increase the amount of fish you catch and can sell, doubling or even tripling your income of a days worth of fishing. The investment of 1,800g for the Fiberglass Rod will pay for itself within a day!
Especially on rainy days when you don't have to water your crops: go to the beach. Sell everything you've caught to Willy before he closes his shop, then either move on to Pierre to buy seeds or continue to fish and sell the rest using the shipping bin.
Prioritise Treasure Chests
While fishing on lucky days, you might reel in a Treasure Chest with the fish. Prioritise Treasure Chests over perfect catches.
Chests can bring a lot of wealth and other useful items to your early game, as they can contain Copper, Iron, and Gold Ores, Geodes, Fire Quartz, and other valuable items.
Recommended Spring Fishing Locations
To avoid snapping lines and wasting energy on high-difficulty "Dart" fish (like Catfish), stick to these beginner-friendly locations:
- Ocean/Beach: the longest walk, but with easy to catch Sardines and Herring and the ability to instantly sell what you've caught at Willy's, it's a no brainer.
- Mountain Lake on sunny days: 50 minute walk through the north exit of your farm, finding mostly easy fish like Carp and Chub and profitable fish like Largemouth Bass
- Pelican Town River on rainy days: 20 minute walk going east from your farm. You'll find Sunfish in the day and Bream in the evening. Not very expensive, but easy to catch.
Fishing at the beach has another great perk. Eating food items that grant a +Fishing stat temporarily expands the physical size of your green catch bar. Sea Jelly, only found when fishing in the ocean, gives a 7 minute +1 boost to your Fishing Level. This makes reeling in difficult smooth or darting fish significantly easier early on.
Fishing for the Bundles
The fishing bundle requires a lot of different fish. These can be caught in different spots, across all four seasons, during specific timeslots or weather conditions.
In spring, you can catch these fish that are needed for the bundles:

Note: All of these fish can be caught in other seasons too, so don't worry if you miss them in Spring.
To maximise your available time, try to stick to a single location while on fishing trips to be as effective as possible.
Pro tip: place a chest on the right bottom corner of the pier. You can stash anything you don't need and clear up inventory space, then take only the most valuable fish home with you to sell overnight. You can also place a chest inside the entrance to the mine, from which you can clear out your backpack while fishing in the Mountain Lake.
The Fishing Game is Frustrating
Yes, I know. Especially with the Bamboo Pole at level 0, fishing is a disaster. But trust me, you need to stick to it. For 2 reasons:
- Fishing is required to finish the Glittering Boulder bundle, as there is no way you are going to be able to buy all 19 fish from the different vendors; and
- You're gonna get FILTHY RICH. Especially early in the game, selling your fish is going to give your income a massive boost.
So just try to improve. Eat some Sea Jelly to magically increase your skill if you catch it. And stick to it. It'll get better - both with increased skill as well as with the Fiberglass Rod that you will be able to afford sooner rather than later.
5. Farm Buildings
Do not ignore farm construction in Spring! Laying down key buildings early sets up your long-term animal production so you aren't stuck waiting for mature animals in Fall or Winter.
The Silo (Build by Mid-Spring)
Your first building should definitely be a Silo. Ignore the Raising Animals journal entry instructing you to build a Coop, the Silo is much more important.
- Cost: 100g, 100 Stone, 10 Clay, 5 Copper Bars (Robin takes 2 days).
- Why it's essential: Clearing grass with a scythe on your farm before having a silo permanently destroys that grass. Once a silo is built, every scythed grass tile grants a 50% chance to automatically deposit hay into storage, saving you thousands of gold at Marnie's shop later.
The Coop (Build around Spring 20-24)
Once you have the silo, you can ask Robin to build a coop for you.
- Cost: 4,000g, 300 Wood, 100 Stone (Robin takes 3 days).
- Why it's essential: Building a Coop in Spring allows you to buy a White Chicken and a Brown Chicken (800g each). Chickens take 3 days to grow into adults and require high friendship to produce Large White Egg and Large Brown Egg for the Animal Bundle. Starting this timer in Spring guarantees mature egg producers by early Summer. Upgraded coops will allow for Ducks and Rabbits, needed for their feathers, wool and... feet?!
What about the Barn?
Why the coop first? Because it has more potential. The coop, when maxed out, will ensure eggs, wool and most importantly: a Rabbit's Foot from a very, very happy rabbit.
While you do need a maxed out barn to house pigs, they will start digging up truffles regardless of their happiness. As long as you have the deluxe barn halfway through fall, you'll be fine. That's why it is better to go for a deluxe coop before going for the barn.
6. This is what you have after 2 weeks
All in all, there are a lot of different paths that you're walking in Spring.
To make sure you're on the right track, you should aim to have a solid foundation by the end of Spring 14 - the second Sunday of the season and your first halfway point.
- Aside from Cauliflower (maybe), all necessary crops have been harvested. Kale is planted.
- At least 1 of each Spring forage items have been saved
- Trees planted for tappers
- Fishing level increased, Fiberglass Rod bought
- Mine explored to level 30, Pickaxe upgraded
- Silo built, funds and materials for Coop available
- 10.000g in sales towards the Fruit Bat Cave
6. End-of-Spring Community Center Inventory Audit
Before going to bed on Spring 28th, inspect your chests to ensure you have secured all Spring-exclusive items. If you miss any of these, you will have to rely on the Traveling Cart or wait until Year 2!
