While you are playing Citadelum and you are building your city, your Prestige Level will go up.
The Prestige Level of your city determines a few things in this Roman style city builder.
Prestige Level in Citadelum
In your Roman city, the level of your Prestige determines which buildings you are allowed to build. When you are just starting out, you can only build some basic buildings. Houses for plebeians (workers), building to gather wood, stone and iron, and farm buildings for the first need for food: wheat.
As your Citadelum Prestige Level increases, it will determine how many temples the Gods demand you build. In the beginning, it is only 1. From Prestige Level 5, you need 2 temples dedicated to 1 God. And once you reach the final level, Prestige Level 10, you need 3 temples for each God to keep them appeased.
Lastly, the Prestige Level adds to the total Raid Risk of your settlement. This means that early game, the risk of your region being raided by an enemy army is 0. But as your renown grows and Prestige Level increases, this raid risk increases too. Only a little and nothing compared to discovering an enemy army on the map, but it does count.
How to increase your Prestige Level
Seeing as some buildings you need to build to advance your settlement only become available at a higher Prestige Level, the real question is: how do you increase your Prestige Level in Citadelum?
The answer is simple. The Prestige Level increases automatically as you attract more citizens. At different intervals, a new Prestige Level is reached, unlocking more buildings for you to construct.
The first couple of Prestige Levels are easily reached. You don't even need to do something special. Just build Plebeians' houses and provide jobs to attract Plebeians. Once you unlock level 2, you can build Patricians' houses. In no time, your city will have reached Prestige Level 3, 4 and 5.
Just keep developing your city and unlock the levels one after the other.
Can you drop to a lower Prestige Level?
If you need more citizens to increase your Prestige Level, what happens if you downsize your settlement? If you lose housing capacity for some reason, for instance because of downgrades of fires, you can potentially drop below the threshold for a certain Prestige Level.
Don't worry, your city won't lose prestige. You will still keep the same Prestige Level, including the ability to construct all the buildings that came with the Prestige Level when you first reached it.
Table of Prestige Levels
Level | Plebeians | Patricians | Required temples | Raid Risk | Unlocks |

IV - 4 | 60 (+20) | 25 (+15) | 1 | 5% | Acting, military, fountains |
V - 5 | 90 (+30) | 40 (+15) | 1 | 10% | Cavalry training building |
VI - 6 | 120 (+30) | 60 (+20) | 1 | 20% | Furniture, gladiators |

*0 required temples: the Gods do require temples according to the religion tab of your Management Overview, but temples aren't unlocked until Prestige Level 3.
Prestige level 1 (I)
This is the starting point of every settlement.
At this point, you can build up your basic settlement. You can provide them with water using a reservoir and have firefighters and engineers protect their homes.
With the economy run by Plebeians, you can start to harvest wheat as their basic food. You can also get them to chop wood and mine for stone or iron.
Available buildings
Prestige level 2 (II)
Prestige Level 2 opens up the second population tier in Citadelum: the Patricians. Patricians are not used for anything, apart from making money.
A few new food types are added at this Prestige Level too. The bath and tavern, required for Plebeians to evolve to level 4.
Last but not least, the first items in the Decorations menu are enabled: a tree and a garden! Honestly, they're not worth the money and resources though. Just wait for the fountains at Prestige Level 4.
Building unlocks
Prestige Level 3 (III)
Gods and temples are enabled at Prestige Level 3. To not anger any of the gods, all 6 temples open up at the same time.
The doctor's office will keep your citizens healthy when provided with medicinal herbs.
There is some more food production. Fish is good for Patricians, eggs and bread for both Patricians and Plebeians.
Buildings unlocked
Prestige level 4 (IV)
A lot of buildings unlock when reaching Prestige Level 4. Mainly: the full might of the Roman army. Smiths, barracks, training buildings, you name it.
Also, entertainment for level 3 Patricians. Roman culture was known for its grande tragedies and comedies!
And the square and round fountain decoration elements, which are a personal favourite.
Buildings unlocked
Prestige Level 5 (V)
Only 4 new buildings become available.
Cavalry can be a great addition to your army. With the new Cavalry training building at your disposal, you can start training these soldiers to reinforce your legion.
The Lion statue is a great decorative element. A pair of them look great on either side of a road leading towards the forum. It also fits in nicely with the gladiator statue coming at Prestige Level 6.
Buildings unlocked
Prestige Level 6 (VI)
On Prestige Level 6, we get to entertain Patricians even more by training Gladiators and letting them fight in the Arena. Patricians need this kind of entertainment from housing level 5.
Also, the furniture maker will provide us with furniture for Plebeians level 6 and Patricians level 5.
Buildings unlocked
Prestige Level 7 (VII)
With Prestige Level 7, 3 more decorations are added to your decorations menu.
It also adds the Circus Maximus for Patrician entertainment.
Buildings unlocked
Prestige Level 8 (VIII)
We're nearing the end of Prestige Levels, so new items are getting increasingly scarce.
Only 2 decorations for this Prestige Level.
Buildings unlocked
Prestige Level 9 (IX)
For Prestige level 9, it's the same as for the previous level.
Only 2 decorations for this Prestige Level 9.
Buildings unlocked
Prestige Level 10 (X)
As with the last two Prestige Levels, only 2 decorations are left for this Prestige Level 10.
