Imagine having a magical space on your farm where the seasons don’t matter and your favorite crops thrive all year round. Sounds nice, right?
That’s exactly what the Greenhouse in Stardew Valley offers!
Unlike standard farmland, which is limited by the changing seasons, the Greenhouse allows you to grow crops year-round, making it a very important building to have on your dream farm.
Whether you’re aiming to produce rare crops, establish a steady supply of ingredients for crafting recipes, or simply want to experiment with new farming strategies, the Greenhouse provides endless possibilities.
Unlocking and setting up the Greenhouse might feel like a big project for new players, but the effort is well worth it.
This guide will walk you through why the Greenhouse is essential, how to unlock it, and the best practices to make the most out of this invaluable feature.
By the end, you'll be equipped with everything you need to transform your farm into a highly efficient agricultural empire!
Why the Greenhouse Is Important
The Greenhouse is more than just a convenience. It really is a game-changing building that can redefine how you approach farming in Stardew Valley.
Year-Round Growing: In the Greenhouse, seasonal restrictions don’t apply. You can grow any crop regardless of the time of year. This opens up opportunities for consistent income, crafting supplies and even fulfilling quests.
Maximising Profits: With the ability to cultivate high-value crops like Ancient Fruit or Starfruit throughout the year, the Greenhouse plays an important role for producing expensive goods you can sell.
Efficient Space Utilisation: The Greenhouse’s layout allows you to plan your crops carefully, making every tile count. Combining crops with irrigation can optimise your yields even further - without having to do anything!
Experimentation and Creativity: The freedom to grow any crop year-round lets you try new strategies or focus on crops you find most enjoyable.
The Greenhouse provides a high level of flexibility and productivity, making it one of the most rewarding upgrades in the game.
How to Unlock the Greenhouse
You can't miss the Greenhouse. It is on your Farm when you start the game, you just can't access the building. It is too run down and dangerous to enter.
There are 2 ways to have this building become functional again. You can go the long way and help the Junimo over at the community center. Or you can be a sell-out and join the JojaMart membership club.
Community Center vs JojaMart Membership
The Community Center can be found to the north of Pierre's General Store. The first time you enter this area, a cut scene shows Mayor Lewis telling you about the state of the building. He tells you that if 1 more person signs up for a JojaMart Membership, he'll sell the building to the Joja Corporation.
Hint: that's you. You hold the power by (not) signing up for a JojaMart Membership.
Both routes have their merits and drawbacks, so choose the one that best suits your playstyle and goals.
Community Center Pros and Cons:
- Pros:
- Immersive and fulfilling experience as you restore the Community Center and reconnect with the villagers.
- Encourages diverse farming and foraging by requiring seasonal crops and various resources.
- Unlocks additional benefits, such as friendship boosts with villagers and extra rewards like quality sprinklers.
- Cons:
- Time-intensive; requires multiple seasons to gather all necessary items.
- Some items, like Gold Star crops and specialty goods, may be challenging to acquire early in the game.
JojaMart Pros and Cons:
- Pros:
- Faster and simpler; you can unlock each Development Project as soon as you have the money.
- No need to wait for specific crops or specialty items.
- Appeals to players who prefer a straightforward, efficiency-focused approach.
- Cons:
- Expensive; requires 140,000g in total (5,000g for membership and 135,000g for all development projects).
- Abandons the Community Center and its charming storyline.
- Villagers may react negatively to your support of JojaMart, which is viewed as exploitative.
Completing the Pantry Bundles
In the Community Center, you’ll find the Pantry room. Completing all the bundles here will restore the Greenhouse. The required bundles and their items are as follows:
| Bundle | Required Items |
|---|---|
| Spring Crops | Parsnip, Green Bean, Cauliflower, Potato |
| Summer Crops | Tomato, Hot Pepper, Blueberry, Melon |
| Fall Crops | Corn, Eggplant, Pumpkin, Yam |
| Quality Crops | Any 3: 5 Gold Star Parsnips, 5 Gold Star Melons, 5 Gold Star Pumpkins, 5 Gold Star Corn |
| Animal Bundle | Any 5: Large Milk, Large Egg (Brown), Large Egg (White), Large Goat Milk, Wool, Duck Egg |
| Artisan Bundle | Any 6: Truffle Oil, Cloth, Goat Cheese, Cheese, Honey, Jelly, Apple, Apricot, Orange, Peach, Pomegranate, Cherry |
It is technically possible to finish the Greenhouse in year 1. For the Crop Bundles, just make sure you plant the seeds for the required crops.
To fill the Quality Crops bundle, add fertiliser to your tilled soil before planting the seeds. Keep in mind that adding fertiliser does not guarantee Gold Star quality yields. Make sure to plant extra crops on fertilised soil, not just 5. 😉
The Artisan Bundle is the hardest to complete. Some of these items are not even just season bound, but also need time to grow. Pomegranates and Apples for instance only grow on a mature fruit tree in the Fall. For this to work, you will need to have it mature by the 26th day of Fall.
As it takes 28 days for a fruit tree Sappling to mature, so you will need to plant the seed by Summer 26. This way you should be able to harvest at least 1 fruit of the tree.
You can try for Peach and Orange as well. These trees bear fruit in Summer. If you manage to get them planted by Spring 26, you will be able to harvest 1 or 2 fruit towards the very end of Summer.
💡 Did you know? Cloth can be acquired by recycling soggy newspaper!
Start planning early by growing and saving these items for bundle completion. Once you bring all of the items to the Pantry in the Community Center and finish the last bundle, the Greenhouse will be repaired overnight and be ready for use the next day.
JojaMart Route
If you’ve chosen the JojaMart membership path, you can purchase the Greenhouse repair directly. It is a much faster route. But as explained earlier, it will cost you a lot of money to buy all the Development Projects.
A JojaMart membership costs 5,000g, and repairing the Greenhouse requires an additional 35,000g. Be prepared to save up a significant amount of money if you choose this route, because none of the other unlockable rewards are cheap!
Keep in mind! Choosing the JojaMart route means abandoning the Community Center entirely. While it’s faster and less resource-intensive, you miss out on the satisfaction and charm of restoring the Community Center, which many players consider a more rewarding experience. Also, you won't be able to claim any of the rewards that the Community Center offers!
Setting Up the Greenhouse
Once you’ve unlocked the Greenhouse, the real fun begins! Setting it up effectively can turn it into the most productive part of your farm. Here’s how to make the most of it:
Preparing the Soil
The Greenhouse has 120 tiles of tillable soil. That doesn't sound like a lot. But even if you were just to plant and harvest Parsnips, you would make a tidy profit of over 50.000g in a year.
Start by clearing the area and tilling the soil. Consider placing quality sprinklers to automate watering and to save time. Use Fertiliser to improve your farming experience (more on that later).
Choosing Your Crops
Sure, parsnips are fun. But you can do a lot better!
Focus on multi-harvest crops like Green Beans, Blueberries and Peppers. They will continue to produce all year round, never once dying during a season change. If you’re still early in the game, Strawberries and Cranberries are excellent choices too.
Later in the game, the Greenhouse is a perfect place to grow Ancient Fruit and Starfruit to maximise profits. Even though Ancient Fruit plants only grow a fruit every 7 days, their base prices at 550g hands down beats any other crops. Apart from maybe Starfruit, which sells for 750g but takes 13 days to grow. Starfruit is a one-off plant though, while Ancient Fruit plant keep producing a ripe fruit after each harvest.
Don’t forget that fruit trees can be planted along the Greenhouse border, providing year-round harvests without taking up any tilled space.
Optimizing with Fertiliser
On the tilled soil, you can use fertilisers like Speed-Gro or Deluxe Fertiliser to boost growth and quality. These are especially useful for crops like Starfruit, where higher-quality yields mean even more money.
Remember: Speed-Gro only affects the initial growth of a plant. The best use for Speed-Gro is using it for high value crops like Pumpkins.
For multi-harvest crops like the Ancient Fruit, you're better off using Deluxe Fertiliser. While Speed-Gro affects the time it takes until the first harvest is ready, it doesn't affect any of the later harvests. Taking a bit longer for the first harvest but having better quality with each yield is much more profitable!
You can also use Deluxe Retaining Soil in the Greenhouse. By doing so, you just have to water once in the Greenhouse and be done with it forever. This is a great way to be able to use every available spot of tillable soil, while also making sure you don't have to worry about watering your plants.
If you are using Sprinklers, you obviously don't use Retaining Soil. Instead, focus on higher quality produce with the Fertiliser.
Planning for Long-Term Use
The Greenhouse isn’t just for profits. It can also support crafting and cooking needs. Consider planting a mix of crops to ensure you have ingredients for profitable recipes and artisan goods.
Pumpkins for instance have a high base price of 320g, which is one of the highest crop prices in Stardew Valley. Put some pumpkin in a keg and you'll rake in 720g per bottle of Pumpkin Juice.
Green Beans have a base sell price of 40g, while 2 Beans make a Bean Hotpot selling for 100g. Eggplants and Tomatos have a base sell price of 60g, but combined into a Eggplant Parmesan they sell for 200g (instead of 120g).
With a well-thought-out setup, the Greenhouse becomes a fantastic tool for achieving your farming goals, whether it’s wealth, crafting, or just having fun experimenting!
Advanced Strategies for Greenhouse Farming
If you’ve mastered the basics of Greenhouse farming, it’s time to elevate your setup with advanced strategies. Here are some tips to make your Greenhouse even more efficient and rewarding:
A Better Location
Are you sick and tired of having to walk from your house to the greenhouse every day? Or are you cursing it for hogging up such prime real estate on your farm, while you really don't have to be there so often?
Go to Robin! Once the Greenhouse has been repaired, Robin can move it for you to a location on your farm that better suits your needs.
Oh and while you're there, you can move just about any building on your farm!
Efficient Layout Design
To maximize your tillable soil, consider arranging sprinklers in a pattern that covers the largest possible area. For example:
- Use Iridium Sprinklers to water 24 adjacent tiles each.
- Place the sprinklers in a grid pattern that leaves no tile unwatered.
The official Wiki has some interesting Sprinkler layouts to maximise your crop space. Once you get access to Iririum Sprinklers and their Pressure Nozzle upgrades, you can be as bold as to only need 1 spot of tillable soil to water the entire Greenhouse... Insane!
Seasonal Crop Rotation for Quests
Even though you can grow any crop year-round in the Greenhouse, it’s smart to keep some seasonal crops handy for fulfilling quests or completing bundles. For example:
- Keep a small section of your Greenhouse dedicated to crops like Wheat, Hops, or Sunflowers, which are often requested by villagers.
- If you are relying on specific products or processes for your income, like Preserves Jars and Kegs, make sure you have some section of your Greenhouse reserved for crops that are required ingredients.
This flexibility ensures you’re always prepared for surprise requests or running low on stock or money.
Experiment with Mixed Crop Planting
Instead of growing only one type of crop, try mixing different crop types. For example:
- Combine fast-growing crops like Parsnips with slower ones like Starfruit.
- Plant some crops for crafting materials (e.g., Hops for Pale Ale) and others for raw sales (like Pumpkins)
This strategy diversifies your income and keeps your gameplay engaging.
Invest in Kegs and Preserves Jars
Take advantage of artisan goods to maximise profits from your Greenhouse harvest. For instance:
- Turn your Starfruit into Starfruit Wine for a massive profit boost.
- Use Preserves Jars to turn low-value fruits like Blackberries into more profitable Jellies.
Building a dedicated artisan area on your farm complements your Greenhouse setup beautifully. Why not build a shed right next door and fill that with Kegs, Preserves Jars and other Artisinal equipment?
Focus on Fruit Trees for Long-Term Value
Plant a variety of fruit trees along the Greenhouse border. They produce fruit year-round without requiring replanting, making them a low-maintenance, high-value investment. Popular choices include:
- Pomegranates and Peaches for their high base value.
- Oranges and Apples for crafting recipes and quests.
By following these advanced strategies, your Greenhouse will become a powerhouse of productivity and profits, supporting your goals in every aspect of Stardew Valley.
Troubleshooting and FAQ
1. Why won’t my crops grow in the Greenhouse?
Ensure the soil is tilled and that you’ve planted seeds directly in the tilled areas. Crops will not grow if placed outside the tillable tiles or on unprepared soil.
Also, make sure you’re watering your plants daily unless you’re using sprinklers or retaining soil. If you are using retaining soil, be sure to use the Deluxe quality and make sure to water at least once. If there isn't any water in the first place, the soil can't retain anything.
Any lower quality Retaining soil will not retain water with 100% chance, so you'll still need to check and water some fields every day.
2. Can I grow giant crops in the Greenhouse?
Short answer: No, giant crops can't grow in the Greenhouse.
3. Do fruit trees need watering in the Greenhouse?
No, fruit trees do not require watering. Once planted and matured, they’ll grow and produce fruit year-round in the Greenhouse, regardless of their season.
Make sure to leave at least one tile of space around each tree for it to grow properly. This means there need to be at least 2 tiles between each tree.
4. Why can’t I plant fruit trees on tilled soil?
Fruit trees need to be planted on the border tiles of the Greenhouse, not the central tillable area. Ensure the tiles are clear of debris and are not tilled for proper planting.
5. Why won't Robin move the Greenhouse for me?
After repairing the Greenhouse, visit Robin to relocate it to a more convenient spot on your farm. This can help free up valuable central farm space or make daily access easier.
Key here is 'after repairing'. You can't move the Greenhouse until it has been repaired, either by completing the Community Bundle or by paying for the Joja Community Project.
6. Can Animals get inside the Greenhouse?
No, they can't. This is important to know for 2 reasons:
- Crows can't get inside the Greenhouse, which means you don't have to put down any Scarecrows (unless you like them for decoration); and
- Bees can't get inside the Greenhouse, which means that Bee Houses won't produce any Honey.
Conclusion
The Greenhouse is one of the most rewarding upgrades in Stardew Valley. It not only opens the door to year-round farming but also gives you the freedom to experiment with crops, boost profits, and achieve your crafting or cooking goals.
Whether you choose the immersive route of restoring the Community Center or the faster, money-driven JojaMart path, unlocking the Greenhouse is a major milestone in your farming journey. Once it’s up and running, the possibilities are endless. From multi-harvest crops to fruit trees and artisan goods, the Greenhouse can become the beating heart of your farm. You won't even have to leave the (green)house any more!
So grab your tools, plan your crops, and get ready to transform your farm into a thriving agricultural empire. One Greenhouse harvest at a time!
